What is a Credit Card?

For those individuals that don’t know what a credit card is; A credit card is a small piece of plastic that can be easily carried in wallet or even on your key chain.  A credit card is a way to borrow money from a financial institution and make purchases from merchants, whether it is over the Internet, local businesses, and even over the phone.  For being such a small piece of plastic a credit card has a lot of potential. 

This day and age obtaining a credit card is simple.  You probably already get bombarded with offers through the mail.  One of the easiest and fastest ways to get a credit card is to apply online for a credit card.  Card issuer’s websites are set up for potential customers to apply online for a credit card by filling out s simple application.  Typically, you will be required to provide some personal information such as name, date of birth, address, and social security number, etc.  You will also be required to provide information pertaining to your employment including annual income.  The application process is quick and easy and unless there is a snag in the process you should have an answer fairly quickly.  Sometimes your application may not be approved right away and the credit card issuer may need to contact you for more information.  If this happens don’t get discouraged, this could happen for several reasons and none of which have to do with your application not being approved.

When you are approved for a credit card it usually doesn’t take long for the card to reach you through the mail.  Once activated you can start to use it at retailers, service providers, banks for cash, etc.  Credit cards are accepted throughout the world and can be used almost everywhere.  Because credit cards carry so much borrowing power it is important to protect them like you do cash.  Don’t give your credit card information to anyone you are not familiar with.  If your credit card is lost or stolen report it immediately to the financial institution for which you received your line of credit. 

When used responsibly a credit card can come in handy in times of need.  It is important to know your limits and stay within them.  It is estimated that over 60% of the US population has some form of credit card debt.  It is possible to live within your means and practice self-control when using your credit card.
